I stumbled across a video that explores an urban sport known as "staff riding" in the Townships of South Africa. This short film takes a look into the minds of young men risking their lives for a moment of exhilarating and dangerous activity.
It's amazing how unaware I have been of this 'sport' as a South African, I find this shocking, yet at the same time I found myself understanding why this death defying sport may be appealing, to young black men that might feel the need to control something or anything in their own lives.
Is this video showcasing the underlying anger and social segregation caused by Apartheid over 20 years ago? I'm not sure...their story is told beautifully and has opened my eyes to a piece of South Africa I didn't know existed, the film is by Marco Casino. Enjoy <3
